Outdoor Living Space Makeover Transforms Bleak Backyard

by Grace Thornton

Before the Elliots began their backyard re-do, it was a standard, barely-used space. But after enlisting the help of Duluth-based Innovative Outdoors, they were able to turn the passive border into an interactive spot that incorporates:

  • an outdoor swimming pool and attached water feature
  • an outdoor kitchen and dining area
  • a two-story fireplace
  • a master bedroom retreat

To begin, some serious clearing of the various brambles and branches needed to be done to create an area for their new swimming pool in the ground as well as access to some sunshine from up above. Then the real heavy duty work started with the building of the pool and the larger architectural elements such as the two-tiered fireplace–a touch that contrasts the summery feel of a pool with the cozy heat of a crackling fire.

A reading room, terraced patio, and lounge by the side of the pool allow everyone to soak in the new surroundings without having to congregate in one space. If family time is on the menu, though, they’ve got that covered with an outdoor kitchen that’s sure to bring everyone together.
