Q. What is the key to a healthy lawn?
A. The best place to start with lawn success begins with location. First, you have to look at the area where you are either planning to install the lawn or assess the location where you have lawn already. This is where the environmental factors, such as amount of light, level of moisture and traffic exposure, needs to be analyzed in order to look at potential success and the type of lawn to select. We primarily use three types of lawn types in the metro-Atlanta area including tall fescue, Bermuda and zoysia.
The next step is to look at what lies beneath … the soil. Balanced soil chemistry provides the framework for ideal nutrient uptake, organic breakdown processes and a strong immune system to fight off disease, weeds and insects. Soil tests are simple and cheap. Simply gather a soil sample 6-8-inches deep from the front or backyard, mix it up in a bag and send it off to a county extension agency. Various levels of minerals and nutrients will be reviewed and recommendations to replenish any deficiencies will be made.
